BU Win Streak Up to 16 After 77-70 Win Over Army West Point

Junior Caitlin Weimar unloaded a career-high 32 points on 12-of-17 shooting, seniors Maren Durant and Maggie Pina also reached double figures, and the Boston University women's basketball program secured its 16th-consecutive win thanks to a 77-70 triumph over Army West Point on Wednesday evening at Case Gym.

BU (21-6, 16-0 PL), which trailed for only 28 seconds in the game, withstood a rally from Army (12-14, 10-6 PL) after leading by as many as 16 points in the second quarter. The Terriers led by two possessions entering the fourth quarter, but scored 24 points in the final frame to preserve the victory.

With the win, BU has matched its program record with 16 conference wins on the season, matching the 2008-09 squad's 16-0 mark in America East play.

Weimar becomes the first Terrier to score 30 or more points since Chantell Alford '13 did so on Nov. 12, 2012. Durant matched Weimar with seven rebounds in a 14-point effort, while Pina shot 5-for-8 from the field to notch 11 points.

Kamryn Hall's 19 points was a team-high for the Black Knights. Lauren Lithgow nailed five three-pointers for 17 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Both teams made four of their first eight shots. Natalie Rhine briefly put Army ahead on a three, only for senior Sydney Johnson to counter with a driving layup to knot it at 10-10.
  • BU capped the final 2:30 of the first on a 10-0 run, starting with Pina's eurostep layup that turned into a conventional three-point play and ending with Johnson's swipe that translated into another Pina layup, making it 22-12 after 10 minutes.
  • Reese Ericson nailed the second quarter's first two buckets to make it a two-possession game, but consecutive Weimar layups replenished the 10-point lead.
  • Sophomore Alex Giannaros buried a 30-foot triple that was responded with Lithgow's right-wing three, but six-straight Terrier points from Weimar and freshman Sam Crispe extended the BU edge to 37-21 with two minutes until halftime.
  • Weimar would close the first half by making BU's last three field goals for 16 points in the first 20 minutes.
  • Midway through the third, Durant cleaned the offensive glass for a putback layup to widen the gap to 13, 49-36.
  • However, the Black Knights rattled off a 10-2 run, started with threes from Ericson and Lithgow, to close the distance to 51-46 with 1:25 left in the period.
  • Weimar opened the fourth by converting a feed from Giannaros, only for Lithgow to knock down a triple to pull Army within 55-50 in the fourth quarter's opening minute.
  • Approaching the stanza's midway point, Durant scored three-straight points, including a layup on Johnson's pass after Lithgow traveled. Her bucket pushed the lead to 68-60.
  • Hall's two foul shots as the clock read 3:26 cut the advantage to three points, but Weimar coaxed Hall to foul out on the next play, sinking the foul shots to boost the BU lead to 72-67.
  • Sophomore Lauren Davenport denied Ericson's left-elbow jumper, and Weimar got Army's season-leading scorer Sabria Hunter to foul out on the ensuing possession. She once again knocked down the two free throws.
  • Weimar would foul out of the game herself at the 2:15 mark, however. Hope Brown later went 1-of-2 from the charity stripe to bring the distance to 74-70.
  • With 1:46 to play and the shot clock winding down, Johnson drove down the left lane to draw attention away from Durant, and she found her classmate for an open layup on the right block for a 76-70 Terrier lead.
  • Durant came up big on the defensive end with a block on Brown's layup attempt with nearly 40 seconds to go. Army collected an offensive deadball rebound, but Brown missed the three on the next possession.

STATS

  • BU shot just under 55 percent in the game, including 6-for-9 in the fourth quarter.
  • Army West Point went over 43 percent from the field. Shooting 34.5 percent from deep for the game, the Black Knights went 7-for-16 from deep in the second half.
  • The Terriers scored 50 of their points in the paint, the first time reaching 50 points against a Patriot League foe this season.
  • BU also sported a 13-3 advantage in points off turnovers, and only turned the ball over seven times itself.
  • Johnson registered five of BU's 15 assists.
  • The Terriers held a 31-29 advantage in rebounds.

  • Durant collected her seventh game in double figures this season. She improved her program-leading career field goal percentage to .565.
  • Pina scored 10-plus points for the 14th time this season. It marked the first time she reached that plateau without making a three-pointer. BU has won its last nine game when she achieves double digits.
  • Johnson is now one assist away from entering the top 10 in program history in career assists.
  • BU went undefeated at home in league play this season. The Terriers are 12-2 at home this year.
