Men's Basketball Posts 66-53 Win over Loyola Maryland
Helped by 11 3-pointers and nine steals, the Boston University men's basketball team returned to its winning ways with a 66-53 victory over Loyola Maryland on Saturday afternoon at Case Gym.
The Terriers (10-11, 3-5 PL) snapped a four-game losing streak by dispatching the Greyhounds (7-14, 2-6 PL) in their first meeting since BU's Patriot League quarterfinal win last March. BU only shot 43.8 FG% against Loyola's 44.9 FG% performance but posted advantages in free throws (13-4), 3-pointers (11-5) and second-chance opportunities (12-6) with a 14-5 lead in fastbreak points.
Graduate student Walter Whyte was one of four with multiple 3-pointers, as he tallied a team-high 15 points. Senior Ethan Brittain-Watts added 13 points, while graduate student Jonas Harper netted nine off three buckets from behind the arc. Junior Anthony Morales dished out a career-tying four assists, and graduate student Fletcher Tynen hauled in a game-high six rebounds.
Kenneth Jones led all players with 16 points alongside three helpers as the lone Greyhound in double figures. Golden Dike could have joined him but went 1-of-7 at the charity stripe to finish at seven points. Alonso Faure posted six points and six rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Helped by three straight BU turnovers, Loyola jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and extended it to 11-5 at 14:07 on Veljko Ilic's layup.
- Facing a 14-8 deficit, junior Miles Brewster sparked a 10-2 spurt that included 3-pointers from Brittain-Watts and junior Caelan Jones.
- After Loyola tied the game at 6:43 (18-18) and 4:50 (20-20), sophomore Malcolm Chimezie broke the second deadlock on a layup.
- Brittain-Watts and Jones both scored again from behind the arc to push the advantage to 28-22 at 2:44.
- The Greyhounds chipped away and hit one of their own at the buzzer to cut BU's lead to 30-28 entering the locker room.
- Loyola stayed on the attack early in the second half and grabbed its final lead, 32-31, at 18:12 on Jones' jumper.
- Harper responded with back-to-back bombs to give the Terriers the lead for good.
- With a 42-37 advantage and 12:01 remaining, Whyte scored on a putback and ensuing free throw to spark an 18-3 run capped by Harper's third trey at 6:52.
- The Greyhounds tried to mount a rally with eight points scored over the next three minutes but would never get any closer.
- BU earned its first win of the season when finishing with a smaller field goal shooting percentage than an opponent.
- Loyola's 53 points are the fewest scored by a Division I opponent this season and the second fewest overall after BU defeated Johnson & Wales, 96-51, back in November.
- After becoming the 42nd Terrier in program history to reach 1,000 points on Wednesday at Navy, Harper moved up to No. 40 at 1,009 points while also grabbing sole possession of No. 7 in the career 3-pointers (199), one shy of No. 6 Javante McCoy ('22).
- Whyte is now just five points away from tying Paul Hendricks ('87) for No. 9 at 1,527 career points.
- With its third straight win in the series, BU now leads Loyola, 16-7, all-time with an 11-1 home mark.
